We got a letter from our waste disposal company today.
It turns out that they’ve used our hard-earned fees to buy some spiffy new trucks. Now the waste disposal specialists don’t have to handle anything that might resemble garbage. Your “tote” (formerly known as a “garbage can”) gets picked up and its contents are dumped right into the truck without ever being touched by human hands.
However, the truck, being a mere machine, can only handle the special totes that you rent from the waste disposal company. You can’t buy this special tote, which irritates me no end. We once got talked into leasing a vehicle which we knew we were going to keep well past the lease period. They told us it would save us money. I finally figured out that the lease cost us $2,000 extra. I don’t think that renting a tote will be cost efficient, even if they do promise to replace it if the waste disposal engineers or their behemoth of a truck should damage it.
It so happens that we bought a new trash can just last month because our old one had worn out after a dozen or so years of hard service. I’ll admit that despite our semi-monthly trips to the recycling center (since our waste disposal experts aren’t of the “green” persuasion) we generally have a pretty full can on trash days. A couple of times a year we might have to haul out our old can to hold a little extra disposal matter.
That shouldn’t be a problem any more. Our old can held 32 gallons. The standard size of the new one is 95 gallons. I’ve already called to request the “small” version at 65 gallons. And I will truly be embarrassed if we ever fill that monster up.

I liked it when we lived in TX. Everyone had an alley and there were dumpsters in the alley. You’d just throw your garbage in the dumpsters and the garbage trucks took care of it from there. Now we have to haul bags out to the curb…we have no cans (or totes…whatever!)
I haven’t lived anywhere we could own our own trash cans for at least 10 years… I do like the giant totes, though. We have 3–trash, recycling, and yard waste. We rarely fill them, but it’s nice to know if we ever need the extra space, we’ve got it.
We’ve had the 97 gallon EZ Go Waste Cart since last year. It is on loan (ha) from the county government so we don’t pay to lease it. Each one has a serial number registered to the address. We can put yard clippings and brush in it – so we do occasionally fill it. We can have a second cart if we are willing to pay $50 for it.
No, thanks verra much.
