I have an odd ability to kind of split my mind in two. One half of my mind, for instance, might be planning for my usual Friday morning Bible study with friends. The other half might have realized that there is no school, and have scheduled an orthodontist appointment for BD. My PDA, which is supposed to catch these problems, didn’t realize there would be a conflict, since the study ends at 10 and the appointment wasn’t till 10:15.
I really could have fit it all in if I had taken BD to church with me. Of course, that would involve facing the wrath of a middle schooler woken early on a day off, but I’m sure I could have bribed her with a blended frozen latte.
If I had thought of it at all, that is. In reality, I went to my study, then hung around church doing some paperwork for our upcoming consignment sale. At some point I looked at my cell phone and realized I’d missed a call a few minutes earlier when I’d wandered away (another bad habit of mine). I didn’t recognize the number, but decided to call back anyway.
As soon as I heard the chipper voice of the office manager announce “Dr. Ortho’s Office,” the other half of my brain kicked back in. I apologized profusely and rescheduled for a time when I’ll have to drag BD out of math class.
Somehow, BD isn’t looking at any of this as a problem. It seems that 12 year olds don’t look on scheduling in quite the same way as mothers.

Again, BDTD…although I’m not usually at church when I miss things. I’ve actually been at home before just doing whatever when I realize I’ve missed an appt!
Especially when the rescheduling happens during the school day! I’m convinced middle schoolers see the ortho as their only savior for getting out of their wretched school day. My son just got his braces off and is lamenting that he only has a few retainer check appointments left.
