Sports Update

Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino did a great job coaching the team.  He still managed to annoy most fans by looking at other jobs in a rather underhanded way, sometimes days after announcing his intention to stay in Louisville, and at least once while the team in question still had a coach.  Dealing with his wandering eye became an annual event here.  This season he publicly stated he was not a candidate for other jobs.  Six months ago he signed a 10 year contract.  While I know that coaching contracts aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on, he actually had me thinking he was going to stick around for awhile.  As of last Sunday, he is the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.  So, Bobby, thanks for what you did for the U of L program, but I’m not all that sorry to see you finally go for real.  Good bye, good luck, and good riddance.

Raise your hand if you foretold Florida’s rout of Ohio State last night in the championship game.  Then email me your picks for the next Powerball drawing.

Today is the day they’ll announce the new inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Two of my all-time favorite players are at the top of the short list: Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn.  There was even some speculation as to whether Ripken might be the first player to get in by unanimous vote.  One sportswriter felt that with the current questions about doping, no player should be a unanimous selection.  Not that he’s accusing Ripken or Gwynn, mind you.  But he turned in a blank ballot to make sure that it didn’t happen.  Of course he announced his brilliant plan to the press.  Methinks it has less to do with the integrity of baseball than with getting himself a little free publicity (which I don’t want to give him, so there’s no name or link here).  If he doesn’t want to vote, then I suggest the Baseball Writers Association give that writer’s vote to someone else who does.

I’m a Ripkin fan, too (isn’t everyone?) I’m curious to see how many votes Popeye, er, McGwire gets.

I hear tell that Louisville is getting Phil Simm’s youngest, Matt, who briefly played with (freshman HS team) and against (pop warner) my nephew. He’s a good kid, you’ll like cheering him on.

Annie, We WERE getting Matt Simms. He announced today that he’s not coming after all. And Michael Bush announced he’s going pro. My guess is that Brian Brohm will also decide to go pro now, too. So we lose a bunch of stars along with a number of coaches that Petrino will hire away. Can you say “rebuilding year?”

I’m so proud of Tony Gwynn…he’s been my favorite player since I came to SD in 1985 and he’s just such a good and decent man (in addition to his mad baseball skills). And it’s great that he and Ripkin got in together because they retired together, too. I wish more professional athletes exhibited the class and professionalism that those two men did.

Denise, I absolutely agree! Those two are a class act.

You still may get Simms. According to his HS coach dad Phil is calling the shots and if the QB coach stays Simms might still head to Louisville.

I just happened to see the story on the kitchen table this morning ;) .
