And Then There Was One

One item left to buy on my Christmas shopping list.

Except that I don’t know exactly what that item will be.  So I’m open to suggestions.

It’s for my older brother (who doesn’t even know this blog exists as far as I know, so we’re not going to ruin any surprises here).  He recently moved back east and has created a neat little garret apartment for himself in our dad and sister’s house.  We don’t usually exchange presents, but since I’ll be sending something for dad, Sis and her son, I don’t want Big Bro to feel left out.  I also don’t want him to feel guilty or obligated to reciprocate, so I just want a little token something in the 5-10 dollar range.

He’s a carpenter, interested in motorcycles, target shooting, and plenty of other things I know almost nothing about.  So, let’s hear those wonderful gift ideas!

Best one wins my undying gratitude.

How about something to decorate his walls?

Hmmm–a thought, but he has mostly sloping walls, it being an attic. And I can’t remember what he has up already.

Would he enjoy a magazine subscription? Like to TIME or National Geographic or a motorcycle mag?

If only I knew what between 5 & 10 dollars can buy you in the USA. TRhen maybe I’d have a clue!

Little Man has some allowance money burning a whole in his pocket, so I took him to “5 Below” (upscale dollar store, sort of) where he purchased a really cool paint-ball-gun-video-game-thingie for 5 bucks.

Plenty of targets and you can even play teams – we’re hooked – then again, we’re easy ;o)

If he likes motorcycles…how about a subscription to a bike magazine. Some good ones are Rider, Motorcyclist, and Motorcycle Cruiser magazines. Or Sport Rider if he’s more into sports bikes instead of cruisers.

I knew I didn’t provide enough info up front. I forgot to mention that he’s not much of a reader. (Plus I haven’t seen a magazine subscription offered in my price range in years.) Liz’s 5 Below store sounds cool to me, since I’m a big dollar store fan!

I have one lead from Baby Bro that I’m working on, but I’m still open to suggestions.

    Does his apartment need anything?

Maybe a video or CD, if you know what he likes?

How about a motorcycle calendar. Everyone needs a calendar and you’re much more apt to look at it if you like the pictures on it!

I happen to know he has a motorcycle calendar already (2007).

Gee, thanks, Mad. The calendar suggestion was about to be the winner! If it’s a Christmas gift, I’d be happy to send you a check and let you put my name on it.

He actually bought the calendar from someone who was selling them as a fundraiser. If push comes to shove, a gift card to Home Depot or Lowes would be appreciated.+

How about a pair of thin leather gloves, like driving gloves? They could be worn on the bike and when on the shooting range. They may be more than $5.00 of course, but he IS your brother, right? :-)
I am old fashioned and think gloves are always an appropriate Christmas gift.

Hmmm, gloves are a possibility, especially since he lives in upstate NY. I’ve also been thinking about some coasters with either the motorcycle theme or something else I forgot to mention–his beloved German Shepherd.

Does he ride? If he does, find out what kind of bike (Harley, Honda, Suzuki…) and go to a dealership near you–you can find lots of inexpensive potential gifts there. Keychains, license plate holders, odd things.

Someone else suggested gloves…but if they’re meant to be for riding, they’re going to be $30 and on up for decent ones, $50+ for winter grade gloves (MC gloves aren’t like regular ones…the seams are on the outside and they’re kind of curved for better handling.)
