Post Derby Wrap Up

I told you about our picks for the Derby last week.

Mr. B decided to put them in an exacta. For those of you who are non-betting people, that means you pick the first two finishers in the correct order. Most bettors will “box” an exacta bet, meaning you bet them with either horse coming in first. Which makes it 2 bets, and costs twice as much. And with 20 horses in the race, we decided on a 3 horse exacta box (which is actually 6 bets, for those of you who have forgotten how to do your permutations and combinations). None of the other horses jumped out at me, so I let Mr. B pick the third one.

He’s every bit as scientific in his picks as I am. He read an article about the owners of one horse that said they were big baseball fans. So he added their horse to the mix. We may be the only people in Kentucky who sent their Derby bets with a friend to Belmont Park in New York, where our friend Racetrack Lenny went to watch the race.

That third horse was Barbaro.

For those of you who may have missed the results (you obviously don’t live in this part of the country), Barbaro won. And he did it by such a considerable distance that it was a good 10 minutes before we found out who came in second.

It was my Bluegrass Cat.

We’re still figuring out what to do with the winnings. Sad to say, we’ve ruled out a Bluegrass Mama Reader Sweepstakes.

I watched (had to take a break from painting) and could NOT believe what a lead Barbaro took! But I was happy to see Bluegrass Cat come in 2nd! I had to tell Eric that you planned to bet on BC, so he wondered if you actually did. Can I be rude and ask how much you won??

Woo Hoo! It was a terrific race – I was pulling for Barbaro.

I have to know…is it a state law that you good citizens of KY drink Mint Juleps on the 1st Sat. in May?
