Tales from the Trip

We had flown into Baltimore and hit a blinding rainstorm on the way to PA. We decided to wait it out while we stopped to eat at McDonalds. Just as I was leaving the counter with our food, the power went off. Just long enough for all the teenage employees to shout “Yes!” and raise their fists in the air. Before said fists had even reached all the way up, the power came back on, and the employees slowly lowered their arms and groaned. It was pretty funny in a “guess you had to be there kind of way.” We went up later to get some parfaits for dessert and learned that the cash registers were out. Apparently this isn’t enough to shut down McDonalds. They wrote the orders down on a piece of paper and didn’t charge for the food. And there I was ordering off the dollar menu.

On Saturday, Mr. B’s brother hosted his annual summer party. There must have been fifty people there. I don’t know when I’ve seen such an eclectic group in one place. In addition to the rest of us middle-aged middle class types, there were a few kids, a retired drummer, a number of grandparents, a couple of bikers, and someone who looked like an Ozzie Osbourne impersonator. Which is exactly what he turned out to be, having come right from a show still in his black leather, chains and eyeliner. He was at the party as a friend, not a performer. Good thing, since he was much nicer than Ozzie (based on what the papers would lead you to believe, at least).

BD’s cousins (two girls, 10 and 12) were with us most of the time at his parents’ house. We drove them home on our last night. The grandparents had given them the rest of the box of Lucky Charms they’d bought for the kids, and all three girls were munching on the cereal in the back seat as they chattered.

Cousin L: Did you remember to get the dog’s ball? (The dog is seldom seen without it in his mouth.)
Cousin T: Yes, it’s in the bag.
Cousin L (Pointing at the inner bag in the Lucky Charms box): In there?
All Three Girls: Ewwww!
Cousin T (recovering quickly): Yeah–get a free prize in every box!

I suppose it takes extremely good timing to be there when they have power and no cash register, BD will remember these days with her cousins–we ran around like a pack of wild animals every time we all got together. Thanks for stopping by!
