School’s Out!

Well, almost out. Today is the last day. It’s not raining, so they’ll have Field Day. I’ll go later to watch the sack race, the wheelbarrow race, the hula hoop contest, and BD’s personal favorite, “jump the river.”

I always have mixed feelings about the end of the school year. While I certainly appreciate the extra sleep in the morning and not having to deal with homework and permission slips and the like, I miss having so much time to myself. Perhaps I’m just afraid that BD will discover the true depths of my blogging addiction.

While she’d deny it if you asked, I think she has mixed feelings, too. Why else did she cart home so many of her teacher’s cast-off worksheets and supplies so she can play “school” all summer?

Isn’t it funny how the end of the school year is indeed a mixed blessing. It takes me forever to get used to the lack of structure at home since Busy Dad and the kids are home all summer and I just keep doing my regular thing.

I feel the same way…I adore the slowness of it all, but soon am missing the structure that school and its activities provide.

It’s tough becoming my children’s sole source of entertainment (read: fun to watch mommy go nuts) but do, however, appreciate the fact that this is my regular thing.

It’s interesting that you mentioned Field Day in your post! I was just talking to some friends who live in other states, and their kids’schools are all now doing their Field Day. I had never heard of this before until they mentioned it. My DD’s elementary school out here in the West Coast doesn’t have anything like that.

During the summer time, we get our DD signed up for the public library’s reading club, and then my DH and I set up our own “math club” for her. She thinks that they are fun, so it’s a win-win for everyone. This way we hope that her brain is not turning into mush over the summertime.

I agree – it’s so nice to have a break from the school routine. Everyone needs it. But you are right in saying that you don’t get time for yourself. In many ways holidays are harder than term time.

Morgan’s last day is today….it’s suppose to be tomorrow, but I’m taking her out to head to IL, since they aren’t really doing anything. I’m not sure I’m ready, she was so hyper yesterday I wanted to throttle her!

Wow! That school must be doing something right if she wants to keep playing at it all summer. I must say this is not a syndrome we are familiar with in the YT household ;)

    School’s out already?
Here in New York state we go until June 24th !
As a working mother, I am not at all ready for the summer…I don’t have my daughters summer plans in place at all!
    Enjoyed reading your blog!
