Traditions

Growing up in a family of six children, we developed some odd traditions. For one thing, it was always considered a big treat to be the one to open a brand new jar of peanut butter. Maybe because that meant we didn’t have to dig down to the bottom of the jar to try to make a PBJ. (I never said we lived a terribly exciting life). Anyway, we would almost come to blows over whose turn it was to open the jar. Whoever won the fight grabbed the jar first was awarded that honor would then ceremoniously carve his or her initials in the top of the peanut butter before we all dug in.

Back then I ate Peter Pan. Now I am strictly a Skippy Super Chunk kind of woman. But some things never change.

I just love that first slice into the paper when you open a new jar of peanut butter, when the aroma shoots up at you.

I still sometimes carve my initials too, but *I* remember (and continue) the family tradition of Peter Pan smooth!

Excellent tradition! In my family, we pass a new jar of PB around so we can all sniff it. But I like the initial carving, too.

Too funny. My sisters and I used to fight over who got to pen and then stick the knife in first–and I was the only kid that ATE peanut butter. They just wanted to steal my moment, really…

I am a strictly crunchy kind of girl myself and I don’t mind which brand except that I won’t eat the old fashioned brand because it’s too much work to have to remember to stir before serving. :)

Very cool tradition! As a kid, I was strictly a grape jelly girl. However, I do like PB now & will have to carve my initials next time I open a jar!
