Hello, Goodbye

About 10 days ago, HS came home after the end of his college semester. Last year at this time, he was just starting to realize how hard it can be to find a summer job. Especially for an ambitious kid who wants to use his talents. I tried to explain to him that 18 year olds are hired because they breathe, not because they’re smart or actually have any skills. He didn’t start working till June, when he landed two part-time jobs.

While the boy is bright, I have often wondered if he had any initiative. He took us by surprise this year. Back in the fall, he did some research and found a summer job he thought he’d like. He went ahead and applied for it. After numerous telephone interviews and two video applications, by January he had landed the job. Yesterday we took him to the airport where he left for two weeks of training in Colorado. After that, he will spend the summer as part of a team traveling around the country to run work camps for youth mission trips. He’s handling some of the administrative work and will also be leading worship for several hundred people each night.

Blow me over with a feather. The boy man is making money with his music*.

I’m so impressed that I won’t even point out that he left his room a complete disaster area.

*Of course, I knew he was talented, but who knew other people would agree with his mother?

My husbands mother said the same thing about him when he became a music minister 10 years ago!

Wow, that kid has some initiative to be thinking about summer work in the Fall. He’s going to go far in the world, I’m sure!

You mean… there’s hope? Despite the floor I can’t see and the senior year schedule I had to get straightened out because he kept “forgetting” to see the guidance counselor… it may all snap into place at some point?

    Cool.
