It’s all in the timing.
You have to wait until the bagel is cool enough so that the peanut butter doesn’t melt and run all over your fingers and the plate (if you’re the type to bother with a plate for such casual fare), but not wait so long that the bagel is no longer warm at all and you needn’t have bothered toasting it in the first place.
