It’s not every Halloween that starts with Sunday School and church. At least it helps keep things in perspective. Not that I’ve ever been one who thinks of Halloween as a “pagan” holiday. I just think of it as a time for kids to dress up in costumes and go trick or treating (and for me to steal some of my kids’ chocolate). For the last few years our church has had a “fall festival” for the kids, but this is the first year it’s actually fallen on Halloween. They used to ask kids not to come in anything too scary so the little ones wouldn’t get freaked out. Understandable. Now they’ve added “no witches, ghosts or devils.” I think that’s a little much, but they didn’t asked me. This is the first time in years BD hasn’t been a witch or a close relative (last year she was Morticia Addams). This year she’s going to be a “diva.” It’s a definite improvement over her original idea, which was to be a dead princess. BD was hoping to go without an adult this year, and I think I’m ready to send her. However, one of the friends who’s going along isn’t (or at least her mom says she’s isn’t–could be the mom herself).

For those unfamiliar with Kentucky phrases, a "holler" is a small valley between mountains.
